Angel Hazes
Angel Haze is a young, new comer to the Hip-Hop scene. Born in ’91, she started writing lyrics when she was only 11 years old now signed to Universal Republic and Island. While from Michigan originally, Haze lived in Long Beach and New Jersey, as well, before making New York her own. Her signature track, “I Run New York,” is both an ode to her adopted city and a mission-statement: She runs NYC. Pretty soon she’ll run hip-hop. It was written only after living in the city for four months.
Described as a “young fiery feisty spitfire mc”, her lyrical ability is regarded highly by many. The twenty one year old emcee, released her last project mix Reservation in July.
Haze is loosely tied to a new wave of underground hip-hop. Azealia Banks, Le1f, Mykki Blanco, and a whole group of progressives who are tied together in their subversion of hip-hops norms, whether itβs in sexual orientation or the complete avant-garde factor of their work.
Themes of her mercurial identity run through her work; the title of Reservation, her first mixtape is partly a play on her Native American heritage, and her rhymes are reminiscent of the technically gifted East Coast rappers of the past, though she says she was most inspired by Eminem. Her style, like her rhymes, is both dark and confrontational.
