Can you believe that the iconic Source Magazine is twenty-five years old. It seems to be have been around forever and is indelibly linked with the hip hop culture it covered in such depth. Can you also believe that The Source was started as a newsletter by two Harvard students, Jon Shecter and David Mays, only moving to Manhattan in 1990, a statement of intent.

As hip hop has continued its worldwide dominance of popular culture, one magazine that is synonymous with that culture and still relevant today is the Source.

It’s always been controversial, has had a lot of ups and downs in its publishing history and has had moments that it and we would love to forget but The Source has never lost its love of the culture it champions. Happy Birthday.
We salute The Source magazine in its silver jubilee year, and two of its most (in)famous products – The Source Awards and The Source’s Five Mics.

Also of unquantifiable significance is the vast archive the magazine boasts online, a first stop for anyone interested in this cultural colossus that is hip hop.

The Source Awards – the stuff of legend, especially since not one has been televised since 2002. It started as it meant to go on…the first show was in 1994 where Tupac ran on stage during ATCQ’s performance, also Onyx managed to shoot off live ammunition during their performance. You can catch this on Onyx’s documentary where the scene was captured by amateur footage.

It didn’t get any less ‘real’ or controversial. The next year (Paramount Theatre in MSG) the show was recorded for broadcast at a later date. This was the one where Suge Knight ignited the whole Death Row/Bad Boy conflagration specifically and the East Coast/West Coast beef in general.

The awards in 2000 actually only partially happened as fighting meant that only five of the 20 awards slated to be given out actually were.

Five Mics
Still seen as the holy grail of any hip hop artist, an award of Five Mics from the Source. Only 45 albums in the last 20 years have been awarded the coveted Five Mics. Here’s some of our favourites:

People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm — A Tribe Called Quest
Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em — Eric B. & Rakim
AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted — Ice Cube
One for All — Brand Nubian
De La Soul Is Dead — De La Soul
The Low End Theory — A Tribe Called Quest
Illmatic — Nas
Life After Death — The Notorious B.I.G.
Aquemini — Outkast
The Blueprint — Jay-Z
Stillmatic — Nas
The Fix — Scarface
The Naked Truth — Lil’ Kim
Trill OG — Bun B
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — Kanye West

This month we take five quintessential New Yorkers from five quintessential New York institutions/occupations (a bar, a record shop, a photographer, an artist/pop up shop and a rapper) and ask them five questions.

It’s a fresh take on the same old ‘best of’ lists which populate the media, and not the usual ‘people/places to watch for’ in 2013.

They’re all products of New York and reflect both our heritage and our journey ahead in the city we’re from and love.

And these are our questions:
What’s your favourite view of New York?
What do you most look forward to on your return to the City?
What smell most reminds you of New York?
What’s your favourite subway line?
On any given day where would we find you, uptown, down town or mid town?

STEVE POWERS/ESPO’S CREATIVE OUTLET

Graffiti writer turned artist and now a sign writer as well, Steve Powers a.k.a ESPO, is the proud owner of the newly opened ESPO’s Creative Outlet in New York City. The dual-purpose space serves as the workshop for Icy Signs early in the week, only to transform into a gallery/shop from Thursday to Sunday. Fans can wonder around the shop to look at his works on paper, metal, and wood, alongside selected ephemera, books, and catalogs from the past. If you are in the downtown Brooklyn area, be sure to drop by the store.

What’s your favourite view of New York?
Driving through the meadowlands towards exit 14C. It looks like the Emerald City rising out of a dumpster

What do you most look forward to on your return to the City?
That second right turn out of the tunnel that leads me home

What smell most reminds you of New York?
Dumpster juice in mid July, always makes me smile

What’s your favorite subway line?
the original one, the 1! I also love the D train

On any given day where would we find you, uptown, downtown or midtown?
Ideally all three, today I hit that trifecta from Harlem to Tribeca

BARCADE

PAUL KERMIZIAN is one of the owners of Barcade – the ultimate boys own den: a bar with a dual focus; an endless rotation of American craft beer and an equally eclectic lineup of classic arcade games. In 2004, five (!) friends came together and opened their own bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Each had been working in either Film/TV or graphic design in New York and four of them had attended Syracuse University together. They were enthusiastic about American craft beer and had grown up in the 1980s playing classic arcade games. Looking to start their own business, they decided to take a chance and combine the two passions. Barcade now has three spots, here in New York, one in New Jersey and the third in Philadelphia.

What’s your favourite view of New York?
The inside of Grand Central station, or driving on the street above the station.

What do you most look forward to on your return to the City?
NY sports talk radio

What smell most reminds you of New York?
A pizza slice joint

What’s your favorite subway line?
JMZ

On any given day where would we find you, uptown, down town or mid town?
Brooklyn!

PERMANENT RECORDS

This welcoming spot caters to music nerds on every budget, from penny-pinchers (used CDs, cassettes and records go for as low as a buck each) to big spenders (a first pressing of the Kinks’ 1965 Kinks-Size $75). It has an old-school, pretension-free vibe and knowledgeable staff.

Beyond a broad selection of indie-rock staples and curios, this Greenpoint haven houses an inviting selection of jazz and funk. As well as offering good deals on trade-ins and fairly priced used vinyl and CDs, Permanent Records hosts regular in-store performances.

Employee Meg Cain gives us the word.

What’s your favourite view of New York?
I’m really partial to the view from East River Park down in Williamsburg.

What do you most look forward to on your return to the City?
The sheer number of underground shows that are around almost every corner in north Brooklyn. There’s always something to see if you’ve got an open ear.

What smell most reminds you of New York?
Probably the smell of pizza steam coming out of almost every block in the city. That and the indefinable subway smell of damp, dust, and trash.

What’s your favorite subway line?
The G train. It’s sort of the underdog of the subway line, everyone makes fun of it but its always done right by me and it’s the lone non-Manhattan route in the whole system.

On any given day where would we find you, uptown, down town or mid town?
None of the above? I’m usually in Brooklyn where those terms lose meaning. But if I am in the city its almost exclusively downtown.

LLOYAL

Lloyal is a Harlem/Bronx representative known for his storytelling skills, comedic rhymes, and selection of beats. His parents were brought together by music. His father was a DJ and one night at the club he was spinning, a club singer came in to sing medleys. They met, fell in love and gave birth to this MC. Music is in Lloyal’s blood and he lets it show in his songs. He’s the product of another New York love story.

What’s your favourite view of New York?
For tourists: Le Bain in The Standard Hotel, it’s in the Financial District. Basically this rooftop spot that has glass walls so you get this 360 degree view of the city inside this room with a disco ball. Add some expensive drinks, beautiful ladies & city lights and you’re experiencing NYC. But for me, my favorite view is outside my window. Beautiful view of Wagner Projects & Taino towers in Spanish Harlem. You can even see Yankee Stadium in the distance.

What do you most look forward to on your return to the City?
Depending on where I’m coming back from, but usually the tree. Honestly, I most look forward to getting my clothes back in the closet. I hate having them folded in a bag. I know that’s not city-related but that’s what be on my mind.

What smell most reminds you of New York?
On the hottest days in the Summer, New York smells like garbage! Literally, the heat hits all the garbage on the streets & the aroma just fills the air. So hot garbage.

What’s your favorite subway line?
The 6 train is my favorite subway line. I’ve always lived on the 6 line so I’m biased but it’s got the newest trains & most technologically advanced stations. It’s always reliable even at the most obscure hour & on weekends (when many other lines suffer).

On any given day where would we find you, uptown, down town or mid town?
Uptown & Midtown. I work Midtown so I spend a lot of time there but other than that I mainly keep it Uptown.

BRAD OGBONNA

Readers of Vice, Spin or Bullett magazines, to name just three, will be familiar with Brad Ogbonna’s work. Primarily using film, he feels most at ease when capturing pure moments of age-old friends and locating the unhinged beauty of the places he visits. However, not satisfied with only these aspects, Brad has incorporated the use of digital and video to his style of work, exploring the realms of fashion photography and short concept films.

What do you most look forward to on your return to the City?
I always enjoy getting back to my neighborhood (Clinton Hill), because my bodega guy, ‘Yaya,’ is aways excited to hear about my travels—and it might sound trite, but it’s always really nice to just be back in the city and surrounded by so many different people and the energy of NYC.

What smell most reminds you of New York?
The smell of Chinatown (if you live here you know—I don’t want to get into describing that smell), street meat, excessive perfume, the Subways—both the sandwich chain and the hubs of transportation.

What’s your favorite subway line?
Definitely the F line. It cuts through some of my favorite jaunts like: Chelsea, the West Village, the Lower East Side, Chinatown, DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, and a bunch of other neighborhoods down to Coney Island.

On any given day where would we find you, uptown, down town or mid town?
If you would have asked me 2 weeks ago I definitely would have only mentioned Downtown or Brooklyn, but as of late, I’ve been checking out the MET, MOMA, and Natural History Museum in my free time… I’m originally from the Twin Cities, Minnesota which is not suited for long walking excursions. So, I take advantage of living in NYC by walking around aimlessly looking for something that’ll strike me. My aunt lives out in Jamaica, Queens so I’m out there from time to time. I did a year of school in Flushing and I’m out there every now and then for the food. There’s a good pizza spot in Staten Island so it’s fun to take the ferry down there for that. Most of my photography work is shot on location so honestly you can find me all over.

The Bowery experienced a renaissance throughout the 1980s, a time when New York’s creative scene really began to flourish. Sprawling out of CBGB’s a city would be changed forever by the creative will of a few, that would impact on popular culture the world over.

New York in the hearts and minds of many, is defined by this image of relentless creativity, power, drive, DIY and soundtracked by a raucous medley of Punk, Disco and Hip Hop.
The East Village is essential, as a destination for those trying to become something, an unparalleled energy would emerge that many would gravitate to and spring from. Much like the East Village Other, which would chronicle the area’s glory days of the 1960s, the East Village Eye would be a defining artefact of the times. The first issue was distributed in 1979, a few years after the launch of PONY and right as the touch paper was lit for a cultural epoch which would engulf the city.

Focusing on a mixture of off-the-cuff street reporting, avant-garde art reviews, club and bar recommendations, advertisements for thrift stores and vintage finds, the East Village Eye was the chronicler of the times. Bringing together all the varying nooks and crannies, amounting to a creative output that lies east of Greenwich Village, south of Gramercy and Stuyvesant Town and north of the Lower East Side.

Alphabet City and the Bowery were the main arteries of the area, with CBGBs being the pinnacle of club cool, playing host to and launching the New York Dolls, Blondie and many other acts throughout the years. Not only did music play a huge part in the cultural movement and soundtrack the hub for avant-garde creativity. A number of galleries would emerge from the rubble of the punk rock scene – most notably the Fun Gallery. Founded by Patti Astor and Bill Stelling, the gallery features the works of so many influential artists that were essential to the culture. From Jean Michelle Basquiat, Keith Haring, Dondi, Futura 2000 and Fab 5 Freddy, some of the greatest post-modern artists would be showcased in the space. Patti Astor would also play the roving reporter in Charles Ahearn’s legendary Hip Hop movie ‘Wild Style’ which would feature much of the symbols and capture the essence of the time greatly.

Our love of this era is two-fold, not only did we ourselves spring from this time on to the world stage but our very own Ricky Powell would also be on hand to capture the faces, energy and style. From photos of a young Cindy Crawford to Basquiat and Warhol, Powell would be there, the young-buck on the scene capturing it in all its glory. Counting the key players as friends, The Rickster was right amongst it all, thriving on the energy of a city truly like no other.

A zine and underground chronicle would take the style of the streets, the energy of the city and be the go-to guide to the East Village. The East Village Eye would prove formative for Ricky Powell, giving the young creative his first commission. From its first issue in 1979, it would go on to amass over 70 issues until 1987. Hip and cynical, the prose and the pictures were an amalgamation of resistance, left-field creativity at its heart, the paper would characterize the East Village’s flourishing gallery scenes, music and creatives who would largely change the way the world engaged with art, music and fashion.

Much has been said of Ricky Powell, all adding to the mystery with his enigma adding to the legend.
What we can factually state is that Ricky has photographed some of the best known Rap and Hip Hop artists of all time. From his time spent as the “fourth Beastie Boy” on tour with Def Jam, shooting the likes of Public Enemy, Run DMC and LL Cool J, his portfolio spans much wider than the rap enclave, with Cindy Crawford, Andy Warhol and Madonna amongst others making up his subjects.

Powell’s career began in 1985, when armed only with an Instamatic camera and his unparalleled wit, he smooth talked his way into many a hot party and became the young upstart, a permanent fixture on New York’s party scene. Rubbing shoulders with the high rollers and lowlifes that made New York truly special, he became known for his outstanding work during the late 1970s and early 80s, allowing him unlimited access to every notable name in the nascent hip-hop scene and opened the door for him to join now legendary tours such as License to Ill in ‘87, Together Forever, Check Your Head in ‘92, and Lollapalooza ’94 with the Beastie Boys and many others on Def Jam’s roster. The images he captured while on the road and back at home, as Def Jam’s official unofficial lensman, are today instantly recognizable and can only be described as iconic.

Ricky has become one of the true characters on the streets of New York. Mention his name, you’ll be greeted with a warming smile and open arms, somehow his legend spreads far and wide, credit to the gregarious nature of the enigmatic photographer. He now has a number of hustles that sees him travel the world with his infamous slideshows, in which Ricky gleefully reminisces about his time documenting New York with an inspirational and entertaining performance. A writer also, Ricky has recently interviewed George Lois for Paper Magazine and is beginning to work on a revamp of his public access TV show ‘Rapping with the Rickster.’ – You can check some of those shows on YouTube, phenomenal viewing. We can’t wait to see if Ricky can pull off some equally high-profile guests for his next series.

On the hunt for Ricky’s photos, you’re never too far from a large credit in one of the best publications going. His work has been published in The New York Times, the New York Post, the Daily News, The Village Voice, Mass Appeal, Time, Wax Poetics, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, Rolling Stone, Grand Royal and many other publications. Fully certified, it’s magazines and newspapers like these which truly give Ricky the biggest co-sign, not just a scenester, he’s been recognized by the very best out there for his talent.

It’s for all of the above reasons and more, that we’ve collaborated with Ricky Powell. Sharing the same love of Hip Hop, New York, originality and authenticity, the Vintage Slamdunk sneakers, three t-shirts and a sweatband accessory are the result of a candid love affair between the two. Ricky is a creative in every sense. Ricky’s values and authenticity just can’t be knocked. A vegetarian, the Rickster was adamant in his desire to create animal friendly products, and as such we worked on a heavily-treated canvas shoe. In doing so we explored how the shoe could be as robust as leather, and heavy waxed canvas provides the durability of leather without the use of skins.

The legend adorned across all the accessories, footwear and t-Shirts, is ‘The Rickford Institute’, a conceptual university, conjured up by Ricky as a theoretical place embodying Ricky’s DIY ethos. A true NYC legend, a master of his craft, a gregarious cat who can roll into any situation, party and hold his own, this is reflected by a body of work that covers all of the niches, nuances and enclaves of New York City’s state of mind.

Partnering with Sneaker Freaker, we’ve been scouring the globe over the last 18 months for the greatest pieces from our 40 year history and in doing so bring you an undisputed guide to all things PONY. From interviews with our star athletes of yesteryear, archived products, marketing materials and all the latest on PONY moving forward right up to our latest collaborative endeavors.

The book, cordially put together by the great team at Sneaker Freaker – who are undoubtably the very best documenters of the culture out there. Woody and his team have pulled out all the stops to create what is truly a remarkable look back at 40 years of footwear history and our role as one of the forefathers of the game.

The book, given to key people from our founder Roberto Muller, to the likes of Bobbito Garcia who have supported the brand from it’s early years right up to today, the book begins with a candid and wonderful insight into Roberto Muller and how we started out in 1972.

Offering an unrivaled insight into a sports brand, from performance products to the lifestyle footwear of today, this is more than an anthology, a detailed look into how the brand was born, took over the game and revolutionized the industry. As well as a wealth of interviews and insights from the major players, the book also charts our visual past with some stunning advertisements and marketing materials.

For the connoisseur, the collector and the historian of the game, this book ads much to sneaker culture but above all of that, we’ve managed to package up our past which defines how we continue our legacy for another 40 years in the footwear game.

When we look back at the elements that ensured the confidence of professional athletes, it is surprising considering the developments in footwear today. The technical parts certainly do not stand the test of time but the design certainly does.

A must have in the Hip Hop realm of the late eighties; high-top technical led basketball shoes were the sneakers of choice for any B-Boy and rap fanatic. It is the mix of technical superiority with a crisp and bold design that made them so desirable and why they’re still revered today. So much so that one diehard fan of the footwear uploaded a YouTube video unveiling some pristine original M100’s.

Three M100 colourways will be released in March.

New York would play an integral role in shaping popular culture as we know it, with Hip Hop being born in the South Bronx and CBGB’s becoming the landmark venue for pre-punk stalwarts The Ramones, Blondie and Talking Heads.

This classic silhouette would be released the same year that two legendary PONY athletes, David Thompson and Daryl Dawkins would begin their professional basketball careers. Basketball led the stylistic keynote for the Topstar; originally released in NBA team colourways, in both leather and suede.

We’ve created an interactive guide to the mid-1970s in New York with a selection of videos, interviews and icons for you to explore. Press Next above to view our guide.

As we continue on our creative journey of self-discovery with the twins, Dee and Ricky, we are proud to present our next collaborative offering, a rather special, very limited M100.

Outlandish and colourful, Dee & Ricky’s designs are a result of a melting pot much like the city they’re from. Their M100 is the amalgamation of all the elements we love about the twins creatively in one of our most iconic pieces of footwear.

Appropriating the classic M100 bringing it to life in a new context – the very essence of Dee & Ricky. Whether taking stylistic keynotes from yesteryear and working on something entirely new or ripping up the rulebook and transforming a classic, Dee & Ricky execute ideas that are not only original but also serve as inspiration for those looking to lean left.

These New Yorkers enthrall us, an infectious energy surrounds the duo, to be in their vicinity excites, bewilders and transforms all around them. It’s this charisma and energy that shines throughout their designs. Not for the faint hearted and we love that. Forthright and at times controversial but at the heart of their design work is an honesty and originality unrivalled by their peers.

Bright and colourful throughout, the M100 is taken from its relatively humble beginnings as a Basketball stalwart of the 1980s and injected with Dee & Ricky’s iconic balance of bright colours and textured materials. Rapidly becoming a signature of the two and in many cases preceding their reputation as enigmatic creative hustlers.

With marbleised soles, block colouring, suede and felts alongside meshed technical fabrics, the Dee & Ricky M100 is undeniably as unique as it gets in footwear terms. The block colours, luxurious caramel leather, the white felt accents and the turquoise toe piece demands attention. The inquisitive passer by will stop and stare, the shoe lives life to the full, taking nothing for granted and grabbing everything around it Much like the Basketball M100, Dee & Ricky’s design is not to be trifled with; it’s tough and pays homage to the street ballers who wore the original M100 on the court.

Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my blog. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickies to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

Their take on the reworked archive Slamdunk Hi and our NYC Topstar Lo have had us very excited since we launched them to the media at Bread and Butter, Berlin. The shoes are now hitting stores and are a truly great milestone for PONY on our 40th Year adventure.

Both the Slam Dunk and Topstar Low will be available in Colette, Concrete, Coming Soon and Shelta from the 9th of December. You will be able to join us in Paris for an exclusive meet and greet with the duo on the 15th at Colette and also on the 16th in Amsterdam at Concrete! They’ll be on hand to sign your shoeboxes and meet the fans!

Ricky Powell, a New York institution in his own right over the last 30 years, provides some cultural context for where we’ve come from and how we continue to represent and empower cultural Products of New York. Ricky’s latest contribution is his (vegetarian) take on the Vintage Slamdunk and Ts including one featuring his landmark photo of The Dogwalker. If you ever get a chance to see his slideshow, just do it.

Sneaker Freaker is a recognisable force within the culture but offers much more than a definitive guide to a vibrant and diverse scene. They are DIY, starting from a humble zine to global phenomena documenting the intricacies of avid fans, design and revelations within the sneaker world. Woody and his team have been documenting the history and future of PONY with a strictly limited book celebrating our diverse history. Watch this space for further exciting developments with this book.

Born in Manhattan back in 1972, long before anyone gave a flying Swoosh, PONY was founded by Uruguay-born entrepreneur Roberto Muller, a charismatic maverick who lived life by the seat of his pants. Literally the heart and sole of the company,Muller created Pony in his own image, which is to say it was equal-parts energetic,
rambunctious and oh-so-ambitious. Within a few short years, this self-styled Yankee swagger had PONY strutting the globe at the vanguard of a new era in athletic colonialism.

(Text taken from PONY 40 Year Anniversary Book)

As PONY moves forward, it seeks inspiration from a new generation of resilient and determined creative entrepreneurs that are re-defining the cultural landscape on their own terms. Through collaborations, connections, and a dedication to the original ethos – what defined PONY’s formative years inspires and represents its future.
